The newest release of Dallas-based NeoFirma's oil and gas software, version 7, promises to make the software extremely flexible for users and to provide NeoFirma with economies of scale. NeoFirma president Steve Haglund said the software has been cloud-based since its inception in 2003, meaning users have not had to host it themselves.

"What's new about version seven is that we're truly multi-tenant, in that we're able to run one instance of our software, and yet it's been written such that, based on who's using it, it's partitioned by company, by user, in a very secure way," he said. Information is partitioned according to company and user. The advantage for the company is that it achieves economies of scale by having just one instance running, no matter how many clients are using it.

"The advantage for clients is the ability to enhance and evolve the platform much, much faster than traditional software," Haglund explained. This gives NeoFirma the opportunity to make updates and adjustments on a daily basis -- many of which, because they involve the behind-the-scenes workings of the software, are invisible to the client other than in possibly improved speed or functionality.
